The Mifare DESFire Course Description

Mifare DESFire: the next generation Mifare card, based on multi-application file system, standard 3DES cryptography and supporting faster communication and faster EEPROM - an ideal low-cost platform for advanced RFID applications not requiring full featured operating systems.

Aim

The aim of the course is to fully describe the Philips Mifare DESFire and Mifare DESFire SAM (Security Access Module) products, including practical excercises to demonstrate and use all functionality of these products in RFID schemes.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students shall be able to:

  • understand the functionality of Philips Mifare DESFire PICC;
  • be able to migrate existing applications from Mifare Standard to Mifare DESFire, understand the migration issues at PICC side and host side and to use MAD (Mifare Application Directory) Version 3 on the Mifare DESFire;
  • understand the functionality of Philips Mifare DESFire SAM and to delegate all host-side cryptographic processing to the DESFire SAM;
  • be able to design and implement applications for the Mifare DESFire system, with or without the SAM;
  • be able to program the host side cryptographic processing to use all cryptographic functionality of the DESFire PICC, and to verify it against a known good implementation;
  • be able to program the host side cryptographic processing to use the DESFire SAM;
  • be able to install and use DESFire and DESFire SAM demostration and teaching software, which is provided in source code as part of the course.

Prerequisites

To register to the course, the customer must have a proof of valid Non-Disclosure contract with Philips Semiconductors, as the course requires use of the Philips confidential functional specification of the DESFire and DESFire SAM products.

Students are expected to be familiar with basic concepts of smart cards and RFID technologies. Familiarity with IT security concepts will be helpful. A working knowledge of at least one computer programming language is highly desired to effectively complete the laboratory work.

Teaching Methods

Lectures using presentations with interactive electronic whiteboard. Supervised laboratory sessions with sample cards, card readers and development tools.

Handouts And Other Materials

Each student obtains the following materials for the course:

  • Course handouts in a printed form and on electronic media;
  • Factory default Mifare DESFire card;
  • Factory default Mifare DESFire SAM card (subject to availability);
  • Full set of Mifare DESFire related documentation;
  • Demonstration and teaching software implementing all Mifare DESFire and Mifare DESFire SAM functionality in interactive and scriptable environmnet, including full source code of the software;
  • Electronic copies of all work created during the course.

Timing and Assesment

The course takes 2 full working days. The sessions are 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30.

The students are evaluated based on their performance during the laboratory work. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completing the course.

Fees

The course costs 1500 EUR per student, including hot lunches and warm and cold drinks and small snacks.

Course Location

The course is currently available in the SmartWorldAcademy facilities in Prague, Czech Republic. For optional on-site training, please contact the SmartWorldAcademy staff.
